My suggestion is to swap computers so your brother can have the good one for games and you can commence with programming and technology related projects with his slower one. I am running the Raspberry Pi Desktop in VirtualBox and I cannot install VNC server. If possible, you should also consider connecting the RPi to your router (by Wi-Fi or Ethernet), not straight to your Macbook, as this could require more configuration on your Macbook for your Raspberry to get an IP address and access to the internet.
